Martha Berry sends Mrs. Sullivan a letter telling her that her niece is not eligible to attend the school because The Berry Schools are only for rural boys and girls.

In this letter Frances Sullivan explains her desperate story in a bid to get one of the children in her care, Dorothy, a place at Miss Berry's school. Frances reveals that she has a basic understanding of the Berry Schools already and has a connection to Miss Berry through the person of Miss Ida Duncan.
